Costa Rica
Coffee grows in the Central Valley around San José and in the Los Santos hills of Tarrazú and Dota to the south. Farms in Alajuela and Heredia, near Juan Santamaría airport, run tours most days, some with hotel transport. Chocolate tours are in La Fortuna, Sarapiquí, the Heredia hills and Mastatal, and Monteverde has a tour that covers both.

Guides
Buying a farm or finca in Costa Rica
Coffee fincas in Costa Rica sit inland, mostly between 800 and 1,900 meters, and sell their fruit through a system regulated by the Coffee Institute (ICAFE). This page covers what a finca is, where the coffee grows, and how prices and agents work.
Coffee and chocolate from the Costa Rica cruise ports
None of the coffee or chocolate farms listed here states a pickup from Puerto Limón or Puntarenas, so a farm visit from either port means a car or a ship's excursion. From Limón, Route 32 climbs to the Central Valley and passes within a mile of Sibö Chocolate; from the Pacific side, Route 27 runs from Caldera to San José.
San José to the coffee farms
The closest coffee farms to San José and Juan Santamaría airport (SJO) are in Heredia and Alajuela, from about 20 minutes away; Britt Coffee Tour sells transport from hotels in San José, Heredia and Alajuela. Tarrazú, Monteverde and La Fortuna are day trips or overnight stops on Route 2, Route 1 and its branches.
From the Puerto Limón and Puntarenas cruise ports
On the Caribbean side ships berth at JAPDEVA's Terminal Hernán Garrón Salazar in Limón; on the Pacific side at INCOP's cruise pier in Puntarenas. No farm listed here states a cruise pickup; see the cruise port guide for roads and distances.
