What a Kona coffee farm is
Kona coffee grows on the western slopes of the Big Island, between about 800 and 2,500 feet. Below 800 feet it is too dry and hot for coffee; above 2,500 feet the seasonal rain pattern disappears.
The belt runs about 30 miles north to south if the outlying South Kona farms are included, and the main belt is scarcely more than a mile wide.
The Kona Coffee Farmers Association counts about 700 farms. Most are under five acres, and 50 acres is an exceptionally large farm.
Annual rainfall is 40 to 60 inches.
