By car

A travel guide to the coffee tours puts the drive at over 2 hours from the San Juan area to most haciendas, on twisting mountain roads, and suggests a full day or a night in the area.

Two highways lead out of San Juan. PR-22, a toll road, runs west along the north coast to Arecibo and Hatillo. PR-52, also a toll road, runs south through Caguas and Salinas to Ponce.

From Arecibo, PR-10 runs south through Utuado and Adjuntas to Ponce, and PR-129 runs south to Lares. From Ponce, PR-123 climbs north toward Adjuntas; Hacienda Buena Vista is at km 17.3 on it. PR-2 continues west from Ponce along the south coast toward Yauco.

Set the hacienda's own address in your navigation. Most give a road number and kilometre marker, for example Carr. 129, Km 38.4 for Hacienda Tres Ángeles and Carr 111 KM 50.1 for Café Gran Batey.

Rental car or private driver

Rent a car in San Juan, or hire a private driver or a tour that includes transport if you would rather not drive mountain roads. The San Juan Cruise Port lists rental options among the ways to get around the island.

Some farms name a transport partner on their own site. San Juan Artisan Distillers, a rum distillery in Vega Alta, names We Take You LLC. Sandra Farms in Adjuntas books its tour through Airbnb Experiences; ask the farm about transport.
